Al Sharpton-style group victim politics,

I was treated to a couple of minutes of "Honest Al" preaching to the converted on some news show this weekend. What a Hustler! Can you imagine what the press would have done to them if he and Jesse were White Ministers?

I think most of the Republican party, especially the younger generation, is trying to get away from this heritage.

Certainly one way to read it but this is only part of their problem on this score. Many of their candidates, most recently the Republican senatorial candidate in Louisiana, campaign on racial codes as a way to get the white vote out. I just saw Carl Levin, the Michigan dem senator, on Russert's show, note that it was used by the Rep candidate for governor in Michigan this last time around.

I don't think the Lott stuff makes that visible this time around. Unless it just goes on and on and on. In short, if he stays. And I have no doubt that Rove is quite well aware of this. Let me recommend again that Esquire piece. More of those and I'm going to believe he's actually pretty good at politics. ;-)

Blacks can be conservatives without being called race traitors, and will have two parties competing for their votes, instead of only one party which can take them for granted. And the Republicans will be free to oppose Al Sharpton-style group victim politics, on principle.

I assume it won't strike you as strange that I think there might be other alternatives than Al or J C Watts as ways for blacks to configure their political stuff. There are quite a few rather impressive black figures in the House Dem Caucus. Note, there are no blacks in the Rep Caucus.
