I had to look up loblolly. It sounded so sweet and innocent, the kind of tree that would know its place, that one would be proud to introduce to the family.

I learned it means mudhole in the South, and also is a thick porridge eaten by sailors. Lob presumably is the sound thick porridge makes when it bubbles, and lolly is an old British word for broth or stew. For unknown reasons, it has gotten applied to several varieties of pines. I wonder why.
Trust no tree.
