Lucent Wins a $100 Million Contract
18 minutes

MURRAY HILL (Reuters) - Telecommunications equipment maker Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - news) on Tuesday said it has signed a $100 million agreement to supply next-generation wireless infrastructure equipment to U.S. Cellular Corp. (AMEX:USM - news).

Lucent, based in Murray Hill, New Jersey, said the five-year deal to supply third-generation (3G) CDMA (news - web sites) 1XRTT gear and services will support wireless operator U.S. Cellular's conversion to the newer technology, which began in October and is scheduled to be completed in 2004.

Under the deal, Lucent said it will upgrade U.S. Cellular's existing Lucent-supplied base stations, as well as add new base stations. Lucent also will provide engineering, installation and other services.

U.S. Cellular said the new technology will allow it to provide consumers with advanced wireless services, greater voice clarity and better service reliability.

CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) is a wireless transmission standard that competes globally with GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technology.

Tom- Re:>>>”Isn't this worth a little ye hah! ?”

Would you please knock it off!!! I’m having a hard enough time trying to control my exuberant emotions with all this good news being posted on this thread. We need to get some more balance. What did you do to Eric L? We need him to counter some of this stuff!!!!

I’m attempting to do some serious analysis relating to MSM sales, Handset sales, QCT & QTL revenue/ EBT per MSM, etc, etc. It’s just making it difficult to concentrate on this important task.

Jim

Tom,

in my opinion, it is very significant though I need to think this through. The original article appeared a few days ago and was too long for me to translate. I did link it to a few here and babblefish apparently made no sense in this case.

Anyway. In no particular order, these are my thoughts:

China Netcom and China Telecom are almost certainly going to be receiving 3G spectrum sometime in the future. All we know is MII regime is changing next March so it is unlikely to be awarded before March. The current "official guess" is 2004 but I place no weight on that.

In the mean time, xiaolingtong (little smart) has 10 million subs and growing. That is some type of a TDMA based PAS with no migration path. Clearly, there is no reason for Telecom and Netcom to be pouring more money into that sink hole.

Now if Telecom or/and Netcom choose to replace this PAS with a CDMA WLL, that means when MII eventually awards the spectrum, they can hit the ground running. What does it take to "upgrade" a WLL CDMA 1X to a "normal" CDMA 1X? Software? Add some RF gear? but all CDMA basestation equipment would not change at all.

ZTE, LU and UTSI are currently the suppliers of xiaolingtong. UTSI is not licensee but the other two are.

Do you think it is significant? But ye hah is cheerleading and I will ban you if you do that again. <gggg>
