About 24 US companies are also named. Several German companies were still involved in Iraq in 2001, thereby breaking the international weapons embargo against Baghdad, according to the sections of the Iraq dossier obtained by Die Tageszeitung, a leftwing Berlin-based daily paper. The paper's long-standing Geneva-based United Nations correspondent writes that the paper had obtained sections of the 12,000 report relating to arms procurement. The copy it obtained "came from the only complete original of the report, which after arrival (at the UN) in New York two weeks ago, was made available solely to US specialists for 24 hours". "These (specialists) had at least the time and opportunity to remove information, before copies were made for the other four permanent members of the security council," the article said. This is the first known leak of the dossier. The US government is gathering additional information that verifies that German companies remain involved in weapons-related co-operation projects with Iraq, according to the newspaper. The number of German companies cited in the report is larger than the sum of all other companies mentioned, and other German research organisations and many German individuals are also mentioned, it said. The report could prove embarrassing for the German government, which has strained relations with Washington. Berlin is also due to take up a temporary seat in the UN security council in January.worldtribune.com
