Well, you really should study the economic relationship between the pre-war North and South. Indeed, you don't even have to do that. Just imagine a world wherein Jefferson had to literally feed himself. There would have been no William and Mary education for Jefferson. In fact there would have been no George Wythe to teach Jefferson. Thus, there would have been no Declaration of Independence. Had slavery not existed in the west as a massive capitalistic monstrosity, there would not have been a Rousseau to influence men like Jefferson. There would not have been a colony from which American ideals could spring because the colonies themselves were based upon a slave driven economy.

In the first American census, the slave states were richer than the non-slave states.

(Of course, they weren't counting the slaves - who had no income, and America was an agrarian society, with little manufacturing to speak of... which necessarily favored the slave/farming states in the count).
