Perhaps you missed my earlier analogy.

Returning stolen property is not stealing.

Let's say your father steals a car and gives it to you. You don't know it's stolen and keep it for many years until you find out it was in fact stolen.

You didn't steal the car. Should you keep the car? What if you don't know exactly who your dad stole it from or if that person is dead. Do you get to keep the car then?
