Oh please. Mehmet Ali "Agca" never had any ties to any religious groups that anyone could find out about. He claimed that the Bulgarian secret service had put him up to it on behalf of the KGB <g> Three Bulgarians were jailed and tried in Italy, only to be acquitted for lack of evidence. He talked to the pope in question later on, who pardoned him (or something). He was quite mad, if you recall his drivel.

Al Qaeda has plotted at least twice to kill the Pope, 1995, 1999, during trips to the Philippines.

Huh? All it takes is a long-range rifle, you know...

It is said that the Third Mystery of Fatima was that someone would try to kill Pope John Paul II but that Mary would prevent it.

Right. We are getting deep into religious territory here. I think I will get out here...
