Bush is in talks to open an international school in Shenzhen. Amid tight security, Neil Bush yesterday met local government and education officials in Shenzhen to discuss plans to open the school, which would educate children from kindergarten to high-school level. Mr Bush also spoke at an education forum in the city, the Guangzhou Daily News reported. The report said Mr Bush, who arrived in Shenzhen from Hong Kong on Monday night and will leave the city today, is seeking to build a boarding school for the children of foreign business people as well as Chinese. Mr Bush is chairman and chief executive officer of Ignite Learning, a Texas-based educational software company. In a television interview yesterday, Mr Bush said the school would use creative education methods that would allow "its students to go to universities all over the world". He said the project was in an early stage of development. When asked about recent social developments in China, he said "the leadership of China should be given a big pat on the back". The newspaper report said the Shenzhen side was deeply committed to the project and that the school had already entered the development stage. It would be called the Shenzhen Chinese-American School and would begin hiring staff soon. The location of the school is not known, and it is unclear whether Mr Bush is investing in the school himself or representing a larger group. The market for international schools in China is booming as the economy expands. The Shenzhen area already has three international schools, and parents can expect to pay tuition fees of up to US$20,000 (HK$156,000) a year. Mr Bush, who has a controversial past, is the latest member of the Bush clan to have business ties to China. His father, former US president George Bush, is a member of the Carlyle Group, a high-powered investment group with close links to Beijing. His uncle, Prescott Bush, is president of the US-China Chamber of Commerce and last December was reported to have had dined privately with President Jiang Zemin in Beijing.
