Judy Lombard Whitfield Gulfport, Ms. Trent Lott and Civil Rights Monday, 16 December, 2002 Dear editors: As a citizen of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, as an African American who grew up in Mississippi during the Civil Rights Struggle, as the mother of a twenty year old Alcorn State University student who put his life on hold in order to lead a protest this year against the flying of a Confederate Battle Flag on a public display in Harrison County, I have a few questions and observations concerning Trent Lott. 1. Why was the Mississippi State flag not displayed at Senator Lott's press conference on Friday? Was the Senator afraid that the Confederate Battle flag on the state flag might be seen as the racist symbol that it is? 2. Senator Lott said that he was working to have a monument built in Washington to honor the 13th Amendment of the Constitution abolishing slavery. Why didn't the Senator mention the fact that, Mississippi didn't ratify the 13th Amendment of the Constitution until around 1995--over one-hundred years after it was established in this country? 3. Senator Lott said that he would appear on BET which was owned by his good friend and fellow Mississippian Robert Johnson. Do you think his "good friend'' forgot to tell him that he sold BET over a year ago? 4. Senator Lott said that he would be talking to some of the "Black Leaders'' and he mentioned that one of those leaders would be Mr. Innis with C.O.R.E. I doubt if most African American's know who Mr. Innis is, so why did Masta' Lott appoint him as our leader? 5. If the Senator is not a racist why did he rebuke Bennie Thompson in 1995 when he pushed for help the FBI to release documents in the 1966 murder of civil rights activist, Vernon Dahmer? 6. If the Senator is not a racist why doesn't he give the public an opportunity to see what is in his Sovereignty Commission Files? 7. The Senator says that he works hard for the states black colleges. He says he has had interns for Alcorn University work in his office. What percentage of his interns have been African American? What are his thoughts on the protest of the flying of Confederate Battle Flag on public property by Jason Whitfield, an Alcorn Student? 8. Why didn't any media ask him these questions?
