my initial reading and all of my acquisition of books on this subject was conducted in the late '70s and early ?80s

What got you so deeply into it, Steve? I have followed the "conversation" you, Nadine, and Neocon have been having with a lot of interest.

My thoughts on the subject are, "Hey, it's done, what do we do now?" Rather than the "It was the Jews/Arabs fault because of what happened in 1937!" They seem to spend a lot of time over there in this type of dialogue.

We mentioned in our conversations about the Terrorist problem that the Muslim Culture seems to be a troublesome one. This has certainly added to the ME problem. I was reading an "in depth" piece today about the unemployment among the Saudi Citizens, and the trouble there now, and on the horizon, because of it. Take the oil away from Saudi Arabia, and it is difficult to make much out of the sand.

Steven,

Thanks for the book list. I'll take a look at the introductory stuff, then see if I wish to read more, particularly the Tuchman and Cohen. I may wait a bit on reading the 48 stuff.

The list of source materials reads like someone who is doing or contemplating doing a book on these issues. Your writing suggests you could do a terrific one--you write extremely well and, apparently, with ease; and you have that difficult ability to stay at the level of the forest while keeping the trees firmly in mind.

Another question. Bill Kohn suggested Martin Gilbert's book, Israel. My library had a copy so I'm skimming it now. Much detail; Gilbert's kind of broad stroke stuff with patient attention to the sources. But it has a completely non-reflexive top down orientation, no sense that Arabs have reasonable motives. But, at the same time, a stirring story, particularly placed against the background of worldwide persecution of Jews. Oh, yes, Gilbert tells the story only moderately well.

I may well change my mind about it if I read further. But it does seem imperative, for serious thought, that one have some, however meager, sense for the historical sense the Israelis and the Palestinians bring to this. Your exchange with Nadine got me going on that. Thanks to both of you.

Do you have take on the Gilbert book?

In the same category would be Arabs and Zionism Before World War One by Neville Mandel. Good book, good luck with finding one. Of course you’re near NYC, no? In New York all things are possible, at least where looking for books is concerned.

Steven, it's the age of the Internet! many things are possible now. Haven't you heard of www.abe.com? Great source for used books (Amazon sells used too, but abe is better)? Of course, you'll have to figure for yourself who will ship to Luzon and if it's worth the shipping costs -g-.
