We’re live at 30 Rockefeller Center in New York City. Tonight we’re posing the question: Is the United States moving too quickly with-toward war with Iraq? Incidentally, we’ve asked correspondents from around the world to give us sort of a-just a brief snippet, an opinion, mood-of-the-country sort of report. We’ll start with Tom Aspell. Tom, the people of Israel, do they want us to go get Saddam? (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) TOM ASPELL, NBC CORRESPONDENT: Phil, Israel wants this war. The Iraq situation is front-page news every day, but it is below the fold. But do Israelis think the U.S. is moving too fast towards war with Iraq? No, they don’t. (voice-over): Ronan Vinograd (ph) is a law student. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: In the long run, Israel will be safer if the United States will go to war against Iraq. ASPELL: Israelis have been told Iraq might fire missiles, like in 1991. They know they could be targets again. UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I don’t like war. Look... ASPELL: Judith is a World War II concentration camp survivor. UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I am afraid. (UNINTELLIGIBLE) I am afraid. I personally-I am very afraid. I don’t want to die. I don’t want to die. In the war, people are dying. ASPELL: Karin Levy (ph) is a student. If war with Iraq happens... UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: We are ready, you know? Every day, we are ready to hear in news that there is a bomb attack anywhere. So if there is a-if there is war against Iraq, we will be ready (UNINTELLIGIBLE) . ASPELL (on camera): So as the U.S. moves toward conflict with Iraq, it seem Israel hopes for Iraq’s defeat before Saddam Hussein can inflict casualties here.
