China Unicom to Put on 3G Next Year

BEIJING, Dec 18, 2002 (SinoCast via COMTEX) -- Wang Jianzhou, president of
China Unicom expressed on December 12 in the CDMA Global Carriers Summit that
China Unicom is going to trial the Qualcomm-based third generation CDMA 2000
network approved by the Ministry of Information Industry (MII).

An expert from MII says completion of the trial has far-reaching applications
for the schedule of 3G license issued by the State Government and for the
telecom carriers to choose their 3G standards. It is expected that the sale of
China's 3G market will be RMB 100 million by 2010.

Some international CDMA carriers with or without 3G network say they are waiting
which 3G standard China Unicom to choose. China Unicom's decision will determine
who will be their partners, because it is easy to make cooperation between
carriers with common ground in management and standards.

Wang Jianzhou adds China Unicom can use directly experiences of Japan and Korea
carriers. What he said leaves a gleam of hope for international carriers. Still,
China Unicom's value-added data business has been opening for all, and SK
Telecom and Qualcomm both have signed agreement of establishing joint ventures
with China Unicom.

China Unicom seems likely to go ahead with Qualcomm's 3G standard but others may
not.
