It was for $'s that Russian and French were holding back on earlier SC UN resolution..<< Energy Intelligence Briefing Newsletter noted that published comments from Lukoil’s president, Vagit Alekperov — suggesting that the company had received assurances from the Kremlin that Lukoil would not lose its rights to the West Qurna oil field if Saddam is overthrown — had provoked the dictator to retaliate.

Putin has yet to comment in public. But other Russian reactions are telling. Russia’s Interfax news agency quoted an unnamed Kremlin official Friday saying: “If Iraq takes such a decision, then one of the major reasons for Russia to support Iraq in the current international situation disappears.” In other words, if Saddam grabs back the lucrative oil contracts he has used to bribe Russia and France into supporting him on the Security Council, then Putin at least will cast his lot with the United States and Saddam’s victims, the Iraqi people. If this is what happens, it will be fitting. For the last time, Saddam’s attachment to a code of revenge will have overwhelmed rational dictates of statecraft. —Boston Globe, Dec 18>>

Saddam days are numbered, it will be most probably an inside job with outside prodding. The stage is being readied. The time is ticking and new roadmaps for middle east being made and soon will be under execution. Kabul like fall of Baghdad is in offing in my humble opinion.
