Read the history of these kinds of unwise policies.

This was the "Comment" from you in your first post that gave me the impression that you felt Rummy was wrong and the Generals correct. On top of that a lot of your posts has indicated your generic dislike for the "Neocons"

When we talk about the Pentagon, we are like a couple of blind men examining an Elephant. We will see what we want from whatever angle we take.

On top of the normal bad promotion policies in the Defense Department, I see an Air Force Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, an Air Force Special Operations Chief, An Armored Chief of Staff of the Army, etc. I wonder if anyone wearing "Blue Tabs" (Infantry) is near the top.

It's easy to see that Rumsfeld and his crew have not done their homework trying to persuade the military.

Rumsfeld has more "Time in Grade" at the top of the Defense Department than anyone we have ever had. He understands this problem, and announced the new COS early to get some Infantry people to the top. He has brought in consultants to interview Generals before they are promoted to top ranks in an attempt to get some "Gunslingers" at the top. You would think that the Sec Def would be able to move this Elephant without all of these problems, but the Brass is just to used to the Clinton years, when they could "Yes Minister" The Sec Def and the White House and get away with it. Rumsfeld also has Cheney for support, who struggled with these people during as Sec Def during 41's tenure. Plus total support from 43.

I hope Rummy wins the struggle. Our "Warfighting" ability depends on it.
