engineer, "all that is needed from the carrier for automatic meter reading is a reliable cheap offpeak data pipe that allows me to hook up a 1x or DO modem"
Sounds good to me, and even though a meter guy (on minimum pay?) may spend only 5 minutes per house, per month,I can see advantages.
BUT since they already have a grid, couldn't they transmit this information by copper, if they wanted to? Give every meter an IP address, and a chip or two.

Engineer, I don't know if you have followed Ben Garrett's posts about Q investing in an American DO network through NextWave's spectrum--it might be just the thing you're thinking about.

Sorry for the Q-centrism. VBG.

Agreed, I just got the new CDM9500 through Verizon. Very large bright color screen, but crippled by the carrier. Charges for getting new screens, ringtones, data. Information on data access is scattered and unclear on their website. Website doesn't work with some browsers, and has bad links.

Just saw that PCS has an unlimited vision access deal. For about $40 per month.

eng - 100% right. And how about someone with some Snaptrack and 1X prduct. How about wandering about the street with all that and local stores appearing on teh handsets instead of unwanted ads at home on our PCs.

Pop ups might even be worth it if youre wandering around the street or in a mall or an airport.

Best,

L
