In formal on paper power the House and Senate Leaders (Speaker and Majority leader) are more powerful then the chariman of the appropriation committes. In actual practical reality a strong chairmen can be more powerful then the majority leader.

This is a major loss for Lott.

True.

Currently, he is suggesting that he will resign
his Senate seat if he loses on the majority leadership position.

He might be serious about that or it might just be a tactic to try and maintain his position.

The only two people more powerful than the Majority Leader is the President and the VP.

Everybody knows there is one person who is more powerful than the Majority Leader. Ask Alexander Haig.
