The dem's want him to stay in as leader now. A wounded Lott is infinitely better for the dem's than a new strong and assertive leader. If Lott is forced out now, the bad news for the GOP will be short-lived, but a wounded Lott as Majority Leader will be a heavy drag on the GOP prospects during the next election follies. That's why JJ and other dem's are seemingly offering forgiveness and an olive branch. The only better outcome for the dem's is for Lott to resign from the Senate and then his replacement would be a dem appointed by the dem gov'r of MS.

But Lott will not resign from the Senate even if he is convinced to barter away his Majority Leader's job. Talk about serving your constituents! The price of Lott giving up the Majority Leader's job is that MS would probably end up with enough federal pork to rival the DOD budget and Lott would end up with a statue the size of Lady Liberty, when he finally does retire.
