Since ancient times, it has been accepted that To the victor go the spoils of war!!! Britain returned some territories because those territories turned out to be "hot" potatoes which were too HOT and too COSTLY to keep!!! Israel returned the Sinai as it was mostly useless desert and it is not of great strategic value from a military standpoint. Maybe the return of Sinai to Egypt was a secret precondition for peace demanded by Egypt to save face and the return of Sinai most probably had the blessing of the U.S.
