Actually, my point was that it is not entirely unfounded, and that affirmative action, defined as positive efforts to eliminate the last vestiges of racism, but not as arbitrary targets or a high degree of reverse discrimination, is desirable......

It isn't a free country if you do not have the freedom to be racist. Remember that. And once you start articulating which kinds of beliefs are off limits, you might as well trash the constitution. The government should not be allowed to be racist (IMO), but you must allow for freedom of thought and action in the public (that does not rise to threat or violence), and part of that freedom will be the freedom to be racist, and the freedom to segregate on on individual basis. So white flight, for example, is part of the freedom of association- however annoying that may be for liberals.
