Tom- I am very familiar with meter reading issues you discuss. High speed is definitely not required for this type of data. Very small amount of data per meter.

Large electric users are already on real time metering.

As far as residential goes, wireless vs. wireline, is simply a cost issue, the meters can call in usage once a month or more frequently. Utilities already know the load curves for residential so they don't need real time and it is only cost issue with manual meter reading costs. And of course to eliminate meter readers is a union issue.

Lots of companies have gone bankrupt trying to go wireless for meter reading, e.g. cellnet.

One of the leaders in meter reading. A number of cities in the Dallas area are using it currently.
