My Christmas Haiku's for you.

My first gift of the season! Thank you!
There is something so very lovely about a gift that says I made, wrote, painted.. this for you. I wish we could get back to that sort of gift-giving. Small things, personal things, things from the heart. I say this because I have no money, and only four days til Christmas, and wonder if people would appreciate receiving a short, personalized, humiliating column about themselves- about the only thing I do well, according to my husband, who is not at all happy about my saying he is Chevy Chase in Christmas Vacation.

It is very nice to see you, crow. How have things been? We gave my sister-in-law a set of books by William LeastHeat-Moon that you might enjoy and even identify with, having travelled the country as you have.

Blue Highways
PrairyErth (A Deep Map): An Epic History of the Tallgrass Prairie Country

My husband loved them, and has read Blue Highways a couple of times, and also bought it several times after he loaned it out and then couldn't stand not having it in his BBB (Bookcase of Beloved Books). He says Heat-Moon is an incredible writer, poetic and deceptively simple (as I think all truly great writers are- if I have to struggle with the meaning of a sentence, searching for main clauses, my opinion and interest sink rapidly).

I'm currently reading Bill Bryson's The Lost Continent: Travels in Small-Town America and it is laughaloud funny. I love his style and really recommend him. The last book of his I read- and loved- was Mother Tongue- English and How it Got That Way.

I still regularly use and love the wonderful book you told me about for quotations. What a great find that was...

A very merry holiday to you...
