I've never thought those companies were of equal quality. Applied remains far higher quality than EMC and JDSU.

But, given current industry conditions, I think there is more downside in AMAT, than in EMC or JDSU (I'm talking about the stocks here). The market is treating EMC and JDSU as broken stocks, while AMAT still has a rich valuation (based on the LT historical P/S range of 1-6).
