simple, people but particularly institutions want to book some profits this year, so they sell.

<<I still find it very odd that gold stocks would move down as a group on the day after gold spikes to US$355 in Tokyo trading. >>

Have you thought to look at today's price move(or lack there of) of US traded gold mining firms trading at less than $2.00? - the limits of those which can be sold short? Answer your question? So much for the idea of gold mining stocks predicting gold price? - unless they can scare people out?

I find this lack of reaction in stocks as a very positive sign that the physical buying is getting strong around the globe. Big houses might be caught off guard.

Hello marek, An unoriginal idea for a movie script:
a. Every ounce of mined gold within easy human reach has at least three owners: one in physical possession, one via derivatives, and one via storage ledger;
b. One fine day, for no reason at all, other than curiosity, all reach for their gold;

c. Confusion, chaos, unhappy noise follow.

Imagine the drama, tension, suspense, shock, surprise, pain, anguish, disgust, and ... the hunt for responsibility!

White House and FED Emergency Reaction Task Force swings into rapid deployment, using Echelon to shutdown all financial markets.

Camera zooms in on the newspaper headlines.

Coming to a theatre near all. Few movies will play equally well as a comedy, suspense thriller, horror, drama, or documentary. This movie may not play as science fiction.

Imagine the SI posting on that fine day;0)

Chugs, Jay

P.S. Again, excuse me for repeating myself, but the day is nearer

Gold: Futures, Future Options, Leases and a host of Gold stock, gold index's etc ALL expire today. Some expired early this am, others are cycling through the day today. Add to that Currency speculation, and the offsetting gold holding related to over night positions and spikes do occur on a regular basis.
