Wal-Mart; Dozens Injured Major Damage Reported, But No Fatalities POSTED: 3:15 p.m. EST December 19, 2002 UPDATED: 7:01 p.m. EST December 19, 2002 JACKSON, Miss. -- A tornado has reportedly caused several injuries after plowing into stores jammed with holiday shoppers Thursday in Mississippi. Amy Carruth, spokeswoman for the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency, said the storm hit a Wal-Mart and other stores in a shopping area in Newton, Miss., a town of of about 3,700. She said there had been reports of deaths, but she could not confirm those reports. "We can confirm that we have got neck injuries and multiple injuries, but we can't confirm what other than neck injuries," Carruth said. "It's a small town with not much resources." Carruth said she could not confirm fatalities, but did say that at least 40 people were injured and two people were in critical condition. She said the city has requested additional help from rescue workers in surrounding counties. The tornado struck during a period of violent weather across Mississippi. There had been numerous reports of tornadoes spotted on radar as a line of thunderstorms powered eastward through the state. "We've got major damage here. It's a mess," said Mayor Hamp Beatty. "The tornado destroyed several buildings in the west part of downtown and a lot of people are without power." Beatty also said that no deaths have been confirmed. Beatty said there was damage to the La-Z-Boy furniture plant in town and damage to the front of the Wal-Mart. "We'd like folks to get home as quick as possible and let emergency people do their jobs. But we understand people have to get from point A to point B," Beatty said. "The store was completely dark," said Denise Smith, who was working at Wal-Mart when the tornado struck. "(Rescue workers) was trying to get some of the injured out of the store." Smith said rescue units were trying to find out if anyone was left in the store. She said that nobody was trapped in the store. "We didn't have any kind of warning. The lights flashed a few times and at the last time, they went off. And when the lights went off, the tornado hit." Smith said. "I looked up and I just saw the ceiling moving." She said the tornado literally picked up the ceiling. "As far as I could see, all I saw was a few people were cut and bruises. But I didn't see any major injuries," Smith said.
