Items sold up 30%, revenues up 10-15%. Profits up by $60-100 million. Next three quarters will show losses and but small pro-forma profits. Good chances that Amazon will be slightly profitable by year end 2003, with profits somewhere around $50-80 million. Twelve month forward P/E? 105 to 165 depending on which profit figure you like.

Lots of sales but not much profit probably...

The portal side of the business (my term) which is the agreements with toyrs r us, circuit city and others is highly profitable. There is a lot of growth in that side of the business, you can see the beta stores on the site... restaurants I see is another for the portal side.

The traditional retailer side also is growing rapidly especially electronics and since these are large ticket items the revenue coming from here kindof drowns out everything else for now. Still it makes sense to look at amazon as 2 companies with 2 different growth rates going forward.

This was the mistake that analyst Holly Becker made earlier this year with a valuation downgrade of Amazon at 9 based on their valuation wrt other retailers.
