CDMA? ... do you recall any recent articles written on the subject >> One month ago CDG published a press release (below) with a list of the (then) 8 TDMA carriers that have flipped to CDMA:Former TDMA operators who have migrated to CDMA include: Bell Mobility, BellSouth International Ecuador, BellSouth International Panama, Movilnet, Telecom Mobile Ltd., U.S. Cellular, Verizon Wireless Puerto Rico and Western Wireless. Bell Mobility was not on my list of 9 carriers as their flip was made back in early 1997. The other seven were on the list as were these 2 recent additions: * BellSouth Int. (Columbia) * Bermuda Digital dba CellularOne (Bermuda) I also included BellSouth International (Chile) on my list, but it is not on CDG's list. BSI's Chilean current network is TDMA/AMPS in 800 MHz. BellSouth Chile was awarded 1900 MHz spectrum this past summer and it was conjectured they would deploy CDMA in that spectrum but there evidently has been no official announcement of that decision. It looks like the official list of TDMA to CDMA flips since 1997 shapes up this way: 1. Bell Mobility (Canada) 2. BellSouth Int. (Panama) 3. BellSouth Int. (Columbia) 4. BellSouth Int. (Ecuador) 5. Bermuda Digital (Bermuda) 6. Movilnet-Verizon (Venezuela) 7. US Cellular (USA) 8. Verizon (Puerto Rico) 9. Western Wireless (USA) >> TDMA Operators Choose CDMA2000 CDMA2000 Offers Seamless and Economical Migration Path for TDMA Operators CDG PR Costa Mesa, CA Nov. 25, 2002cdg.org The CDMA Development Group (CDG) announced today that already eight TDMA operators in Asia and the Americas have migrated to or are deploying CDMA2000 for 3G. CDMA2000 empowers operators to offer advanced services today with minimal investment in their network and maximum service benefits. The CDG's executive director, Perry LaForge, commented, "TDMA operators find themselves at a critical juncture. Faced with swapping out their networks for a stronger evolutionary path, these carriers must be sure that the decisions they make today will maximize their return on investment in the future. The CDMA2000 path provides a technically and economically optimal solution, especially for TDMA operators in Latin America, the majority of which use 800 MHz spectrum." CDMA2000 provides a seamless one-step migration path to 3G and has proven benefits such as increased capacity and delivery of revenue-generating, high-speed data applications. CDMA2000 increases the capacity of TDMA networks by four to six times, and since CDMA2000 uses the same ANSI-41 core network as TDMA, there are substantial cost savings for operators and service transparency for end users. CDMA2000 800 MHz infrastructure has been deployed around the world for over two years, and currently more than 100 800 MHz CDMA devices are supplied by 10 manufacturers. Today, there are 26 commercial CDMA2000 networks around the world and 20 more will be deployed in coming months. Former TDMA operators who have migrated to CDMA include: Bell Mobility, BellSouth International Ecuador, BellSouth International Panama, Movilnet, Telecom Mobile Ltd., U.S. Cellular, Verizon Wireless Puerto Rico and Western Wireless. << - Eric -
