It took nearly thirty years before we as a country came up to terms with losing the Vietnam war. But we did, and the country is better for it.

Thirty and a hundred years have not been enough for post-confederates in the deep south to give up on the civil war. They still fly the flag over the capitol in an attempt to find gallantry where there is only shame.

While our forefathers did not have the benefit of hindsight, we now know that slavery was wrong, and that it was abolished not a minute too late. We cannot judge our forefathers with the standards of today, but we can reflect back on them with the wisdom of time.

The country as a whole should just move on, there's nothing there to be admired.

Why was this baggage around for too long? Why this realization dawned on party now ?
