Do you remember the guy who was carrying the ball? His nickname was Ice cube. I never knew Alvin Garrett the smallish wide receiver for Washington; a member of "the smurfs" was called "ice cube." He was returning a kickoff when Cossell made his comment. Was Cossell showing his true feelings? I don't know. I think you need to look at a larger set of actions by a person throughout their life in order to make a fair judgement. Did it get him fired? It certainly did. Was it justifiable? Yes, in the same sense that a CEO who ticks off a large number of his company’s clients is likely to be removed by the BOD if they think it makes smart business sense to do so. I work at a company that has a lot of computerized systems. These systems are the company. As a developer I can make a mistake that might cost the company money or worse, I might damage our business reputation. If I should happen to make a big mistake, my intentions would only be small part of the decision regarding my continued employment.
