Do you remember the guy who was carrying the ball? His nickname was Ice cube.

I never knew Alvin Garrett the smallish wide receiver for Washington; a member of "the smurfs" was called "ice cube." He was returning a kickoff when Cossell made his comment.

Was Cossell showing his true feelings? I don't know. I think you need to look at a larger set of actions by a person throughout their life in order to make a fair judgement.

Did it get him fired? It certainly did. Was it justifiable? Yes, in the same sense that a CEO who ticks off a large number of his company’s clients is likely to be removed by the BOD if they think it makes smart business sense to do so.

I work at a company that has a lot of computerized systems. These systems are the company. As a developer I can make a mistake that might cost the company money or worse, I might damage our business reputation. If I should happen to make a big mistake, my intentions would only be small part of the decision regarding my continued employment.

In that case the guy was running fast with the ball. Howard didn't have time to run his comment through the ABC lawyers before saying it.
