We used to lose power so often we called the power company the Occasional Power and Light Company. In recent years they've done better, but we still lose it five or six times a winter, and once it was out for nearly a week on our corner of the island and we were hauling water in buckets from a nearby pond.

In the old house, we toughed it out with the wood stove. But in this house, we have a fireplace instead of a wood stove, and the fireplace can't heat the outer reaches of the house enough to keep the pipes from freezing, and since we have oil heat it doesn't take that much power to keep the heat running. And the water (we're on a well). So with the generator, we will have water, heat, the microwave, the fridge and freezer, and some circuits including the computer circuit. Will make for a much happier life!
