The two pilots are grounded in their home state of Illinois, where they are regarded as heroes despite the charges they face.

They are field grade officers in the United States Air Force that made a tragic mistake. They were given the stimulants as a tool to use based on their judgement, which failed them. In the F-16 there is no aircrew, only a single airman, and these single airmen must remain alert on a 14 hour mission in order to protect themselves from threat, and to properly execute the mission of war.

If they did not believe that they could function properly while using the stimulants, they should not have taken them. To do otherwise, is to knowingly obey an illegal order, which is a crime under the UCMJ. Instead, they placed their career ahead of their judgement, and this cost four Canadians their lives.

These pilots are not heroes. They are attempting to cloak themselves in a version of the discredited “we were only just following orders” defense.
