I expect that poem of Hugo's is set along the shores of Flathead Lake, (or maybe Kicking Horse Reservoir, of which he wrote several poems) although I don't know the Kapowsin tavern he laments. He tried them all; I none. No, just one or two, long ago. One I tried in Kooskia Idaho appeared in his murder mystery and I knew it instantly.

I too find poetry a powerful medium. It forces out every extraneous syllable and socks you in the face with the rest.

Let me suggest a couple of other authors who write prose as fine as the best poet: They are local people, the kind that I appreciate more than the celebrity author. Sheila Nickerson lived in Juneau and maybe still does.

This guy is a poet, but his books are murder mysteries. He lives in Sitka:

I took the metaphor from an earlier version I wrote years ago and reworked it as I was writing that post. If you can make sense of the imagery, I appreciate the compliment.
