And don't forget all those accounts-including Bill Shirer's-about the flower of German youth, marching and singing, through Holland, Belgium , and France, while the Brits and French "trudged along looking hollow and undernourished". [Not to be too hard on an excellent historian-Shirer-but the contrast couldn't possibly have had anything to do with the latter two having been bombed, shelled, outflanked, and driven from their "final" defense lines, could it?] Shirer's brief mistake-one of few in his outstanding eye-witness accounts of the era-illustrates the nature of the propaganda war going on today. The left will condemn Lott at the top of their shrill voices, while demanding that we overlook the FAR WORSE comments of Patty Bin-Murray. But it is our PERCEPTIONS that cause us to accept and reject, as well as to rate, rhetorical disasters. If you HATE America, you will wink and nod at Bin-Murray, because she praises a mortal enemy of America, and that's UNDERSTANDABLE. But the pro-American enemy, Lott, can be HARMED by carefully constructing, then loudly criticizing, his latest moment of stupidity. The cause is SERVED by condemning Lott on one the hand, and winking and smiling at Bin-Murray on the other. Just as the cause was SERVED by abandoning the Senator's oaths of service to the Constitution and lining up the votes to find William the Bastard innocent before the case was presented to a Senate compelled to act as a jury... Hitler and Goebbels died in 1945, but their SPIRIT lives on, in the American left...
