She doesn't hate America. This is what she said:

"We've got to ask, why is this man (Osama bin Laden) so popular
around the world?,
[An excellent question to ask,
I think]" said Murray, who faces re-election in 2004. "Why
are people so supportive of him in many countries … that are riddled
with poverty?

"He's been out in these countries for decades, building schools,
building roads, building infrastructure, building day care facilities,
building health care facilities, and the people are extremely grateful.
We haven't done that. [WE haven't done that. I think Ms. Murray thinks we could protect our interests better if we HAD done that. Ms. Murray wants to see our country safer, obviously]

"How would they look at us today if we had been there helping them
with some of that rather than just being the people who are going to
bomb in Iraq and go to Afghanistan?" [If you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Ms. Murray has a point here]

No where do I see Ms. Murray expressing hatred for America. Indeed, it seems to me she merely wishes that our policies were the kind that she feels would benefit America more. Now you may disagree with her about what she sees as benefitting America. But it is quite clear that she wishes America to be successful, and that she laments we have not taken a course of action she feels would have made us more successful. I am sure the high school students understood her, even if you do not.
