I know George Wallace was a democrat, but now that voter base is almost all Republican. That was the GOP southern strategy. To woo Wallace voters. Because Wallace voters rebelled against democrats and the GOP realized they could move right to embrace them, turning the party of moderate-conservatives (remember all the moderates who used to be Republican?) into one of hard right-wingers, including racists. Big oil is another constinuency they went after in Texas. Those oil boys used to be Dixiecrats as well. The pollutors of the world. Welcome to the Republican party.
