I was comparing 39 cent chicken to crummy white bread, but the free range chicken at Whole Foods is much cheaper than their highest priced bread.

I get my health insurance from State Farm, which is a mutual as opposed to a stockholder owned company, and the rates compare favorably to any other major I've checked ( I'll be more than happy to be shown I'm wrong here). I guess it helps some that you're self employed but you're still spending real cash and paying FICA. There must be plenty of Folks on SI who are under 65 and not employed (trading for a living is not considered self-employment). My premium has gone up about 50% in the last three years, and this is for a policy that we've never used since the first $5000 is on us and we have negotiated day surgery for considerably less. Like I said - only when it's a choice between bankruptcy and death.
