Speaking of well-publicized rectangular entertainment appliances, prices have plummeted for digital video recorders (DVR's) like TiVo and ReplayTV. After a holiday rebate, you'll pay only $200 for the 40-hour TiVo Series 2 or its rival, the ReplayTV 5000.

Either one will change the recipients' lives so profoundly, they'll heap blessings on your head every time they switch on the tube. A DVR not only records any show you ask for (without tapes), it can also pause or rewind live television, blast past commercials and otherwise bend the TV broadcast schedule to fit your own.

This is a gift best discussed with the lucky recipient - or a conspiratorial family member - in advance, since it requires subscription to a listings service, which costs either a one-time $250 fee or a monthly $10 to $13. The "40 hour" measurement is for shows recorded at the worst quality, too; the more capacious models, like the 80-hour TiVo for $350, may be worth paying for. Details are at www.tivo.com and www.replaytv.com.

thnx Lizzie.

I've been buying FWHT since about 4.30
Have sold some a couple times on run ups and bought more back, etc. They compete with OVER and in some ways with Google too I suppose.
