<<...Specific examples I would consider for such government "investment" would include: 1) a cheap universal "last mile" solution (similar to the rural electrification of the '30s), 2) a ten year assault on cancer (to force feed the fledgling bio-tech industry like the '60s NASA did the computer industry) and 3) something that would be an anathema to the current oil and gas boyz administration - an energy independence initiative...>>

lurqing dude: GREAT government 'investment' examples...I would rather pump our tax dollars into those areas instead of an expensive and counterproductive war in The Middle East...;-)

demographix hurt Japan, but stock & RealEstate bubbles !!!
they were catastrophic
they killed the banks
demographix had little to do with absolute bank decimation
they still hold mortgages for properties 50% underwater
demographix has little to do with continued roads to nowhere, and wasted pension funding into JGBonds

demos work hand in hand with asset busts to kill this island nation economy

by energy independence I infer that you mean "fuelcells" and other renewable sources
I still love the idea of hydrogen generation plants all along the Mexican Baja peninsula (feeding California, West) and Yukatan peninsula (feeding Texas, South)
the solar efficiency would be staggering
