As has been noted in the past by industry sources, sketchy headline wCDMA infrastructure contracts have far less in substance than they've implied in splashy vendor PRs. Contract details are typically shielded in mystery, as vendors seek to inflate their market prowess. Far from comprehensive contracts for national networks - or even commercial networks in the true sense of the word - are contracts simply fig leaves covering barest requirements of spectrum agreements.. and cloaking carrier uncertainty? A case in point: ========== Taiwan Cellular: 03 Capex Set At NT$6.30 Billion, Down 37% On Year Tuesday December 24, 5:29 am ET TAIPEI -(Dow Jones)- Taiwan Cellular Corp. said Tuesday it expects its capital expenditure next year to drop 37% from this year to NT$6.30 billion (US$ 1=NT$34.848), a record low for the company. The decline in spending outlay reflects Taiwan Cellular's cautious outlook for third-generation mobile phone service, which it plans to roll out some time next year, a company official said. Taiwan Cellular is the island's second largest mobile carrier. "The 3G system is still far from mature. As a result, we will focus on only providing the key functions and to the metropolitan areas," the official said. Of the planned expenditures, NT$3.80 billion will be used to install and build a 3G network system and to purchase 3G equipment, while the remaining NT$2.50 billion will be used to improve its existing second-generation network, the official added. Taiwan Cellular signed an agreement to buy 3G equipment from Nokia Corp. last week. Neither Taiwan Cellular nor Nokia would disclose the deal's financial terms.biz.yahoo.com
