Z-- There is no question that Bush, as I have previously indicated, has absolutely the wrong tone when addressing the world. Given the US economic and military power, he should be especially careful not to be perceived as a bully-- or a cowboy. I was moved by the Clinton post you brought here. That is precisely the tone that would increase effectiveness.

However, in this case, even he is doing the right thing. We must reach out to moderate Muslims all over the world. I can't imagine disagreement with this. I even think this is one of the few issues you and Mike would agree on! My fears are that no matter what he does, much of the Muslim world is full of such vitriolic misinformation that he (we) will not be able to get thru. Even our involvement is Bosnia in preventing ethnic cleansing of Muslims was misinterpreted.

The crux of the disagreement we have is whether force has a role. IMO, if we didn't strongly invade in Afghanistan and we didn't bring strong pressure to Pakistan and Yemen, and if we kept our sabres out of sight, it would be viewed as weakness in the Muslim world. A joke, prior to 9/11, that went around the Arab world was,: "What would the US do if we bombed them?" "They would sue!" The skill is to be strong without threatening our allies or potential allies.

BTW-- Mike--- what the hell is the matter with you? Zonder clearly adds to this thread. She has repeatedly forced me to clarify my thinking. I welcome that. Controversy is the life blood of thought!
