Exactly -- true democracy is the cornerstone of our success, if we can keep it. The collective intelligence of informed citizenry is unimaginably superior to anything the Bush plutocrats (or Soviet planners, since it's the same elite structure) could put together.

The problem we're having can be viewed in information-theoretic terms - gov't secrecy, corruption by corporate control of legislation, serve to constrict the flow of information, reducing the country's survival skills.

Therefore the key skill in preserving democracy is preserving information and making that available to the maximum percentage of the citizenry.

That flies in the face of all sorts of gov't initiatives, and will likely only be done from the ground up by grassroots organizers, and internet libertarians.
