Well, yes, now that they've dropped 90%+ from their peak, they aren't $billion m-cap.

But on the other points, I agree that a reliable user interface is valuable and will secure repeat customers. But I sense that reliability is one of those things that is difficult to protect with patents. Look at all cameras. But after a while, they all evolved to the same interface. The truly bad ones become extinct. Like the PVR model you pointed out. Yes sure you see reviews that say that one is easier to use than this or the other. But a good interface isn't enough, and doesn't make a strong barrier to entry. I think these devices are niche products.

By the way, I want to get a video editing system for my wife. She wants to edit a lot of the early video tapes of the kids and collect them together, and sequence them, etc.... I also want to be able to transfer the tapes to DVD. I think H-P has a system customized for that.
