There was a very good reason for putting it there. To avoid a breakup of the union in the late 1700s. Of course it broke up anyway in the 1860s but the founders didn't know that would happen. They had hoped to avoid the breakup and instead they only delayed it.

I think the founders where in general farsighted an inteligent but they were not all geniuses some were not even close. Certainly they were not perfect. However the law they made is the legal limitation on the government. That law (the constitution) can legally be changed but if the government can just ignore it then we are not a system of rule by law but rather of arbitrary rule by men.
