Making health care an "entitlement" seems to have worked pretty well in Europe. I can't speak for all of Europe, but France is damn good. But you're right in the sense that putting our health care system in the hands of politicians would seem to muddy the whole thing--as if it's not already political what with all the lobbying by HMOs, hospitals and carriers. The problem is that today the carriers want it-and pretty much have it- both ways. They want to be able to decide who gets insured-AND- they don't want the government to take care of the rest. But the thing is, we all still pay, however you cut it. When one of the uninsured needs medical care, who do you think pays for that? AND, the very people who complain most about Medicare are the ones ripping it off-check HCA's recent settlement with the government on fraud charges. AND, the HMOs want immunity from lawsuits to boot.
