UF, I think the dark background has a nice effect.

The still life images are quite nice. As for straight portraits
the shots you have posted are also quite nice. I thought that maybe
you actually cut out the subject and paste them onto a black backdrop
on PhotoShop. That would seem quite tedious and time consuming.

BTW, did the waitress get made when you made her hold the black velvet up?
