TOKYO --- DRAMs will be in significant oversupply by the end of 2003, according to a Nikkei Market Access survey reported by Nikkei Electronics Asia.

The report says that as several major DRAM makers start manufacturing on 300-mm wafers the total DRAM output in terms of bits of memory will grow 66% year-on-year to 816.9-petabits. It continues on to say that even with strong demand in the PC market there is likely to be an oversupply of 7%, giving rise to a “market crash”.

At least seven 300-mm wafer fabrication facilities are expected to come to full operation in 2003: one at Infineon Technologies, two operated by Samsung, one at Micron, one by Elpida Memory, one by PowerChip Semiconductor, and one by ProMOS Technologies.
