John, can't comment about the G3.

My brother and my uncle both have G2's and love them.

A G3 would be a quantum leap for you.
Have you looked at the Oly C-5050?

Anyone here own or used a Canon PowerShot G3?

Comments not necessarily specific to the G3....

I have a Canon G3 and find it to be a great camera. I have had the camera for about a month and would buy the same camera again.

The image quality is on a par with other DCs in the same class. My decision came down to size, convenience and features.

The camera can be used as a *point and shoot* or you can grow into it with a full range of easily accessible options.

I never thought I would use the movie mode. However I took several three minute family clips at the Christmas get together that are keepers.

My film cameras will never be used again. (Contax G2, Contax T2, Pentax Spotmatic). The G3 will be passed onto my wife when the next generation DCs come out. I may want a smaller camera (S230?) as an adjunct to the G3. However I can't imagine ever wanting to go back to the larger/bulky SLR type cameras.
