BEIJING: With jewellery sales booming in China, the country has maintained its status as the world's largest consumer of platinum, according to the Gem Association.

... In 2001, China imported 40 tonnes of platinum, some 55 per cent of the world's total output. The value of its annual consumption of platinum exceeded two billion dollars last year, ranking the first in the world for the third year in a row.
