"taking sides" takes generations. not 1 bunch of people sayig "change your life". not 1 US Presidential hooplah. no matter who the President is.

<I argue that their silence while others act out violently in the name of their cause makes them guilty>

They need to take sides. It really is You are with us or You are against us. Silence is taking a side, just as not voting in an election is in actuality a vote.

One definite criticism I have of the Bush administration is that they haven't properly emphasized that, for Arabs, this battle against militancy is in there own interests, economic, social, and political...

But a general sweeping theme of middle east politics has been how to re-establish some "lost" past glory of Islamic society... Marxism failed... And capitalism has failed them as well... Neither made them economically and socially strong viable nations...

So now they engage in militant regressionism, somehow desperately believing that Theocratic government by priests and religious scholars will solve their problems...

Americans have a similar "revivalist" streak running through our society.. Turning to god to bail us out of our "miserable" lives... And when we do such a conversion, it is ofter with great fervor and fanaticism and "all victories due to God"...

This is what Muslims are experiencing... But it's going to require the defeat of the militant movement to where it appears to be just another failed system, while replacing it with something that does work... (or at least education and training)..

They need to be made to realize that "convert or die" is not something we will permit in today's international society... And they need to realize that militancy will only strip them of whatever gains they have made thus far..
