The difference from what I can see between a retail portal and a portal is it is product driven with retailers lining up by general sku.

Question is, why would a retailer list its wares right next to the competitors so people can compare prices and pay Amazon sales commission in the process?

Plus, even if Amazon came to dominate this sector of the market all they would be doing is taking a percentage of the profits from already established retailers, with cutthroat margins. In other words, even if they came to dominate this "portal" market (which remains to be seen) the entire take in profits is about $1 billion.

In other words, Amazon was trading a few days ago at a P/E of 10 over the entire profits it would earn if every single retailer signed up with them...

Portal, retailer, the world's largest bookstore... call it what you may Amazon is overpriced.
