That is the fundamental problem: people are upset and scared about the perception that we are more vulnerable to terrorism. The fact if that we are no more vulnerable now that we were five years ago, maybe less because more countries have joined in free trade and, therefore, have more at stake in fostering a free and unfettered exchange of commerce.

You're absolutely right. The world has grown much smaller but we could still look at a map and see ourselves as being relatively isolated from the rest of that world. Then, 9/11 popped that illusion.

Now, it looks to me like fear has become the catalyst for Americans to give up their freedoms in the name of homeland security. Hopefully, this is just a passing phase, and that once we adjust to the fact we are no longer isolated and consequently vulnerable, we will accept that with freedom comes considerable danger.
